Boys & Girls Clubs celebrate the Day of the Dead with a 5K race in downtown Raleigh

October 12, 2012

The Day of the Dead 5K Race is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst the community, and celebrate an important Mexican holiday where remembering loved ones is a ceremonious celebration

Raleigh, NC - Centro, a locally-owned Mexican restaurant in downtown Raleigh is to host the second annual 5k road race celebrating Hispanic culture and the Day of the Dead on October 27nd, 2012 benefiting the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club in Wake County.

The 5k race begins at 9:00am in front of Centro, across from Capital Square, and is an out-and-back course through the historic Oakwood neighborhood.  A kids’ run will begin immediately following the 5k race and will conclude with prizes for overall 5k race winners, age group category winners, and for participants dressed in the 3 best Calaveras costumes.  Face painting, a Mariachi band, and Day of the Dead cultural festivities are sure to make this a unique event.

As childhood obesity continues to be serious problem amongst youth in Wake County, the Day of the Dead race is designed to be a fun awareness event that promotes health, diversity, and community.  Funds raised from race entry fees will go to supporting the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club, a youth service organization which serves primarily Latino youth and families by providing a safe, positive environment for young people to go afterschool where they have access to a broad range of programs.

Last year the 5k raised over $7,000 for the Club and was a great success with over 500 runners. To honor the emphasis on art and culture celebrated with the Day of the Dead, participants are encouraged to bring art supplies to donate to the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club for their impressive fine arts program.

“It is my pleasure to team up with the Boys & Girls Clubs in creating an event that celebrates health and tradition” said Angela Salamanca, owner of Centro.  “The Day of the Dead 5K Race is designed to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst the community, and celebrate an important Mexican holiday where remembering loved ones is a ceremonious celebration,” added Salamanca.

Lead sponsors of the Day of the Dead 5k race include SAS, the Independent Weekly, the Downtown Raleigh Eye Care Center, Data Control Systems, Fleet Feet, Moffat Pipe Inc., and Live Work Play.
